Burton-on-Trent SA - 19th
June 2009
A size able crowd gathered for
the band's final concert before the end season,
despite the heavy rainfall prior. The
band featured much of the music to be on the
latest CD which was to be recorded the following
weekend.
Opening with the Leslie Condon's
festival march - Celebration
followed by the arr. of psalm 103 -
'The Lord is Gracious'. The first
soloist was principal cornet - Alan Losh playing
- 'Charvari'. Next up
was baritone and resident composer - Iain
Rayner's arrangement of the much loved hymn -
'Morning has Broken'
played by the composer himself. The band are
pleased to announce that Iain has
become resident conductor and will be leading
the band during part of next season.
Despite the early rainfall,
spirit's weren't dampened, and the band were in
fine form. Other repertoire included,
Vitae Lux, American Triology and Broadway!
Percussionist Brendan Rayner got the second half
underway with the drum feature -
Swing, swing swing!
The arrangements of Iain Rayner's
'Blue skies' & 'Ain't misbehavin'
were also featured.
The crowd showed their
appreciation by their warm applause after
the items. Before the band's signature march -
Montreal Citadel - a
piece that has become a favourite both with the
band and listeners this season was the arr. of
'Ill walk with God'.
This had been a really good
work-out before the CD recording and again,
friends were made with the good folk at Burton.
Hopefully a return visit will be in the future.
Salvo at Stotfold SA, - 27th
March 2009
This was the first
time the band had visited the south of the region
and for many of the band members based in the north,
a good trip to contend with the usual ‘Friday night’
M1 traffic. Pleased to say all made it in good
time.
A small but very appreciative
crowd had gathered some not really knowing who
‘Salvo Brass’ were however after the ‘opening’
number they were reassured of what to expect.
Following the welcomes and introduction by the CO,
the first soloist was Principal cornet – Alan Losh –
playing the SA classic by Erik Leizden – A Happy
Day. This was Alan’s first solo since becoming
principal and he showed all his experience and
excellent technique in his delivery. Next up was
Iain Rayner featuring his now ever popular arr/
Morning has Broken!
Other contributions were, Vitae
Lux, American Trilogy, Broadway Spectacular, On
Parade, and two new pieces from the pen of Iain
Rayner – Blue Skies & Ain’t Misbehaving. Despite an
earlier scare in the day from Bass trom Paul Finity
– having to make running repairs to his instrument,
he was able to join the rest of the section in
‘Holiday for Trombones’.
The small but extremely
appreciative crowd rose to their feet following the
band’s now signature march – ‘Montreal Citadel’
which rounded off a perfect evening. Certainly the
band has enhanced its reputation in this part of the
world.
Salvo at Sapcote – 27th
February 2009
This was the third visit by the band in as many
years and we’ve become to think of ourselves at
‘Friends’. Again a good crowd had gathered in
expectant of a good night’s music. Despite the loss
of an earlier rehearsal in the month, due the
extreme weather and MD John Broadhurst only
returning from his cruise, the band rose the
occasion right from the start with Leslie Condon’s
classic arrangement of the festival march
‘Celebration’.
During John’s absence – the band
had been well looked after by Iain Rayner, the
band’s resident composer, who had put the band
through their paces. The band had guest piano
soloist Pauline Wardle from Leicester South SA, with
them to add variety to the programme.
Items featured were American
Trilogy, Vitae Lux, Broadway Spectacular. Soloists
were, Iain Rayner featuring his own arr. Of ‘Morning
has Broken’ on baritone, ‘Holiday for Trombones’ and
a cornet section feature – ‘King’s Trumpeter’s’ by
Norman Bearcroft.
On a more reflective side the arr/
of ‘I’LL walk with God’ was especially received. An
invitation was made for the band to visit a near
local church next year as a result of the evening’s
concert.
St.Wilfrid's Church,
Kibworth, 28th November 2008
Salvo commenced their 2008/09
season with their concert at St.Wilfrid's Church,
Kibworth. This was the band's 3 rd visit back to
help raise funds for their running repairs to the
pinnacles on the tower! The concert was shared with
members from Stoneygate School, Leicester who were
BBC Junior Choir champions for 'Songs of Praise'
2005.
There was a capacity crowd eagerly awaiting to hear
a feast of music as the band, who's member had had
to deal with the usual 'Friday night' traffic and
poor weather conditions to get there. The band were
in fine form as they 'opened' with fanfare 'La
Peri', the church acoustics proved to be prefect for
the programme. The band were performing a number of
new repertoire pieces including - Vitae Lux, An
American Trilogy, Rhapsody in Blue, Broadway
Spectacular and I'll walk with God. Solo items
featured Andrew Piper on clarinet with Joshua Swings
and Adagio from Clarinet Concert -arranged by the
band's resident composer - Iain Rayner and the
trombone section in 'Holiday for trombones' by Rose
/arr, Freeh.
It was debut for new principal cornet - Alan Losh
and baritone Andy Scott - both of whom have added
and settled quickly into their roles. Despite a
little stage re-organising for the singers to
perform and the time running away, the evening
raised over £1500 towards to repairs. The band now
have a breather over the Christmas period - meeting
back early January in preparation for their next
concert at Sapcote in February.
Wellingborough SA -
27th June 2008
Salvo Brass ended it's 2007/8 season on a high
note with a concert at Wellingborough SA - 27th
June. A capacity crowd gathered to hear the band,
who were on 'top' form despite the very warm sultry
conditions. The band officially launched their much
awaited new CD - Salvo Goes Solo - which features
many of the band's own soloists.
